Operation Christmas Child-A Project of Samaritan’s Purse

Operation Christmas Child-A Project of Samaritan’s Purse

Operation Christmas Child is an international project sharing the true meaning of Christmas with millions of poor, suffering and sick children around the world. Last Christmas 271,067 boxes were sent from the Republic of Ireland. For these children, a gift-filled shoebox is often the only present they get at Christmas, or even during the year. Your simple act of generosity gives hope to children caught in the midst of wars, natural disasters and extreme poverty and shoes them they have not been forgotten.

Shoeboxes and leaflets are available here at Pobail Le Chéile and must be returned by 9 November. The leaflets contain all the information you need such as gift ideas and what NOT to include in the box.

Frequently asked questions

Where will my shoebox go?
It will go to Romania, Croatia, Kosovo, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, Nepal, Mozambique and Ukraine.

Do you open the box before it leaves Ireland?
All boxes are opened by our volunteers. It has to be checked that what’s in it is OK for contents and custom purposes. We then seal the boxes, which are next opened by the receiving child.

What is the €3 for?
It’s what it costs us for promotion, processing, transport and distribution of your box. Any surplus goes to our all-year-round work with needy children.

Do you only collect boxes in Ireland?
No, we collect shoeboxes in several countries. Last year we sent over seven and a half million shoeboxes to nearly one hundred countries around the world.

What is Samaritan’s Purse?
It’s an international Christian Relief and Development organisation.

Poetry - Form and Freedom

Poetry - Form and Freedom

In an eight session whistle-stop tour through the world of poetic form with tutor Nigel McLoughlin, we will salivate over sonnets, find virtue in the villainous villanelle, sample the sexy sestina and pant over pantoums. We will battle with ballades and ballads, free-base free verse and slam dunk syllabics and when all that’s done – if there is any energy left we’ll banter in blank verse and round up the rondeaux; have a high old time with haiku and tuck into tanka. So if you don’t know your englyn from your elbow, why not come along and join in with a jocular ottava rima or carry out a ram-raid on a renga.
You just might enjoy it !
First class on Thursday 12th May, then on Wednesday from 7-9 thereafter.
